Access Audits

The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 introduced new measures to end discrimination against disabled people. Since October 2004 service providers have to take reasonable steps to remove, alter, or provide reasonable means of avoiding physical features that make it impossible or unreasonably difficult for disabled people to use a service.

Access audits give a 'snapshot' of an existing building at one point in time. They are a useful starting point in assessing the current state of accessibility and usability of existing buildings. Buildings which are designed or adapted with the access needs of disabled people in mind are likely to be more flexible and make it easier for employers and service providers to meet the requirements of the DDA . An access audit can form the basis of an ongoing access action plan.

TKL Architects has specialised skills in assessing the accessibility of existing and new buildings and has provided consultancy services to a number of organisations in both the public and private sector throughout the UK . Audits have been undertaken of individual buildings and large estates, providing valuable information to assist Clients in developing a strategy for accessibility that can be achieved, sustained and is affordable.
