University of Portsmouth

TKL Architects has enjoyed a flourishing relationship with the University of Portsmouth since their first scheme together in 2003.  Since that time, seventeen successful projects have been carried out, with 2009 seeing a further six added to the list of commissions.

The projects have covered a wide range of types and scales, from specialist consultancy services and design studies to major refurbishment works in a variety of buildings across the campus. In recent years the work has included radical improvements to research and teaching laboratories for the School of Biological Sciences and the creation of a Mock Court for the Faculty of Law, to aid the training of students and professionals involved in the criminal and civil justice systems.

Having been fortunate to be involved with a large part of the University’s building stock, the opportunity has been taken to develop a common interior design style, with certain themes repeated throughout the circulation areas of a number of buildings whilst retaining a degree of individuality. This has clearly proved successful, as the University has used these themes in other buildings.

The Practice’s work with the University of Portsmouth demonstrates the benefits that can be achieved by a close and productive association between client and architect.
