Orthopaedic Outpatients, RSH Hospital

Client: Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust
Value: £610,000 | Associated enabling works £790,000
Location: Southampton, Hampshire

The background to the need for this facility and its associated early delivery date was as a direct consequence of the Trust's plans for the Cardiac Revascularisation and Expansion Project at Southampton General Hospital (SGH).

Before moving the Orthopaedic Outpatients Department from the SGH to the RSH it was necessary to first relocate the Physiotherapy Outpatients Clinic to a vacant area within the older part of the Hospital. In addition there was also a requirement to relocate the Chronic Pain Relief Clinic and Orthopaedic Administration Services before the development could proceed.

Consultation was undertaken with the clinical staff to develop the briefing documentation, room data sheets and layouts, followed by continual liaison throughout the construction phase. The proactive and successful working relationship established between the design team, client team and Contractor avoided financial penalties associated with a delay in the construction of a major project.

Interior design skills were utilised to transform the formerly institutional environment into a more lively and attractive area, with the bold use of colour, patterns and complimentary soft furnishings.
