Colden Common Housing
Client: Winchester District Housing Association
Location: Winchester
Value: £1.7million
The site stands between an employment area and a private sector residential development within a village a few miles south of Winchester. The scheme comprises 40 units of low-cost housing set out in three traffic-free "village green" clusters, with car parking areas readily accessible to each dwelling. The houses vary in size: eight are single bedroomed units, whilst 22 contain two bedrooms and ten have three bedrooms.
The layout was carefully considered to avoid overlooking and to protect the residents' privacy from the remaining area of adjacent commercial development. Moreover, a detailed landscaping scheme was implemented to maintain and enhance the numerous trees existing on the site and to provide screening from the main roads.
Because of poor ground conditions all the houses have piled foundations. However, in each case the superstructure is of two-storey traditional masonry construction with pitched tiled roofs. |
