Westwood Road

This project is an extension to an existing residential property situated within an attractive residential area of Southampton. Whilst some of the older houses remain, most of these are already converted to flats. However, many of the older properties in the area
have been demolished and replaced by large blocks of flats, changing the character of the neighbourhood.

The layout of the proposed development has been informed by the existing building, the outlook from it and the TPO trees to the western boundary. The extension is effectively a separate building linked to the existing building at first floor level. In this manner the integrity of the existing building is fully retained.

The proposed building is 3 storeys tall, contains 6 flats, and is capped with a flat roof to minimise its height. Although the existing building
is also 3 storeys, it has a steeply pitched roof and is much taller. In terms of scale, therefore, the proposal remains subservient to the existing Victorian building.

The shape respects the scale, character and proportion of the existing building. Although modern in appearance, it echoes characteristics of the existing building in terms of the proportions of the fenestration and the articulation of the facades. The materials chosen are taken from a modern palette, with a combination of render and vertical and horizontal timber cladding, interspersed with glazing.
