SWT Haslemere

South West Trains has a commitment to provide additional parking spaces across its station portfolio in order to comply with franchise obligations. Following a number of option appraisal studies, Haslemere station was identified as a suitable location.

The proposals create an additional 260 parking spaces by constructing two decks above an existing surface level car park.

The site is enclosed on one side by a thin tree belt and a ramped road leading to the town centre. The change in level along this road is utilized to enable the car park to be entered at ground floor and exited at first floor.

Planted ‘green screens’ are used along the roadside elevation to reduce the apparent length of the building when viewed acutely.

It was agreed in consultations early in the design process that the building would be an important gateway to the city for rail visitors and should be modern and well considered, by using traditional materials to the road side and station forecourt facades.

The bulk of the building has been located close to the existing station to reduce the visual impact and is clad in brick, some in recessed vertical bands to reduce the mass. The parking areas facing the railway are clad in stainless steel mesh to make them light but strong and also to give the building a shimmer when passed by trains.
